On 16th October 2009, the much-awaited multi-lingual period film Pazhassi Raja was released. Six of the big names in Indian film industry, Mega star Mammooty, Oscar-winner Rasul Pookutty, Jananpith laureate M T Vasudevan Nair, musical legend Ilayaraja, national award-winning director Hariharan and south Indian hero Sarath Kumar, have come together to make this film. MT. Vasudevan Nair, Hariharan and Mammootty were working together after two decades; their previous association was Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, which turned out into a landmark film in Malayalam.
Mammootty starrer ‘Pazhassi Raja’ was one of the costliest films made in the Malayalam film industry. Cost of production for this epic movie was 27 Crores. Malayalam Film industry is very small compared to others like Tamil and Telugu and there was little number of multiplexes. Still the movie managed to give profit to the producers because of its long run and huge acceptance from the audience.
Pazhassi Raja, better known as the Lion of Kerala, was the first Indian ruler to raise the flag of rebellion against the British Raj in 1797, almost 60 years before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. In the film Mega Star done the role of the king. Movie shot extensively in the dense forests of Wayanad, the home of Raja, more than 1000 actors test their skills in the film.

Pazhassi Raja, which was was released on 16th October 2009 has got a record screen count of 125 centers in Kerala. The film opened with a record breaking first day collection of 1.5 crores. After the completion of 3 and 9 days the movie got 4 and 8.85 crores from Kerala box office respectively. On the third week the movie was played 276 shows per day in 85 centers and the 4th week the movie got 69 theaters. The movie earned 14.35 crores with-in 22 days of its release. On the 7th week Pazhassiraja got 54 centers and which marks the first malayalam movie got more than 50 centers on its 50 days of run. After the 71th day the Kerala gross emerged to 26 crores. On the 77th day the movie fetched 27.5 crores from Kerala alone. From the main centers like Trivandram and Eranamkulam, the movie earned amounts of 1.24 and 1.04 crores respectively.
Movie completed 100 days run with a collection of around 30 Crores. Asianet, one of the leading channel in Kerala bagged the satellite rights for the movie for a record amount of 2.5 Crores. From the audio video rights Pazhassiraja earned 2 crores and the total business of the movie touched 49 crores and the movie emerged as the highest collected movie in malayalam industry at that time. Mammootty movies always have a huge box office support in GCC. Movie played more than 7 weeks in UAE and that was also another record for the movie. It collected over 3 Crores from the GCC release. With a total collection of 49 Crores with a huge capital of 27 crores, the film managed to give a excellent profit to the producers.
